Can You Repair Windscreen Wipers?

Windscreen wipers can become loose, or rust. You will realise that it’s important to check them regularly to always have a clear view of the road ahead even if the weather is not so good. When the wiper blades become old or hard, you will have to replace them. They may start producing a chattering sound which could be caused by a build-up of wax, oil, or grease and the wiper blades fail to clean the water away efficiently.

Wiper blades should be parallel to the glass because if they bend, they won’t be making full contact so there will be no smooth glide across the glass. Chattering can also be caused by the frozen glass in times of rain snow and showers. The wipers may fail to clean the glass and smear either in one direction or both.

Worn out windscreen wipers will show such signs as;

  • Chattering noise
  • Faint scratches on the glass
  • Tiny rubber pieces on the screen
  • Visible cuts on the rubber
  • Rubber separating with the metal wiper arm
  • Traces of water left behind
  • Reduced visibility

Windscreen wipers repair is quite easy and differs from vehicle to vehicle since they are attached differently in different vehicles. The most common problem found is when one wiper moves slower than the other or doesn’t move at all. This could be caused by the loosening of the nut connecting the arm to the car, or it could be broken. In the case of the latter, a new arm should be fixed. If the arm is just loose, then it will only need to be tightened.

The wiper blades could be moving correctly but still, fail to efficiently clean the windscreen. In this case, new blades will be required to fix the problem. If they still don’t work, you should then check on the linkage to ensure that it has not become disconnected. If you find that the connection is right and it still doesn’t work, you should then check on the electrical. There could be a blown fuse or circuit. This will simply require an electrician to replace it. You should ensure that your wipers are working properly for you to be safe whenever you’re driving, especially when the weather is unfavourable.
